Water Resources Analysis. Hydrological-Hydraulic Exploitations. Extreme Hydrology and Flood Hydraulics

GEAMA-HYGA has carried out studies for the estimation of water balances, evaluating the different hydrological components with a view to their application in mining restoration, in natural stone exploitations (CUPIRE/PADESA) and the management and exploitation of mines (LIMEISA, ENCASUR, CAVISA).

It has also developed integral studies for the use of water resources in different basins (planning of supplies, purification and mining restoration) as well as studies related to the hydraulics of floods associated with extreme hydrological events.
Characterization and Hydrogeological Studies

GEAMA-HYGA has different equipments for the continuous measurement of piezometric levels, pumping tests, slug, etc:

-Pumping tests for the accomplishment of hydrogeological studies in order to analyze the influence of the waters of the subsoil on the receiving means. Analysis of catchment production by means of staggered pumping tests in order to estimate the efficiency of underground uses.
-Gilg-Gavard tests, with control of the recovery of the phreatic level of the medium at variable flow.
-Lefranc tests, for the characterization of soils and during the execution of boreholes.
Development of interpretation tools for pulse tests (instantaneous injection into low-permeability media)

The identification of piezometric surfaces (isopieces and current lines), estimating flows and analyzing the hydrodynamic functioning of different environments (fractured, porous, karstic), both locally and regionally, has led to the development of numerous reports and studies for the analysis of groundwater exploitation.

Groundwater Development and Exploitation

Development of projects for the capture of water for supply, as well as the establishment of regimes for the exploitation of groundwater and its protection perimeters.

Hydrological Planning

In this field, we can highlight hydraulic regulation studies as well as the analysis of the influence of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive in mining lakes.

GEAMA-HYGA has carried out studies on water uses at an integral basin level, on a discrete use scale and has developed modeling tools for the management of underground resources.

Joint use of surface and ground waters

The use of all water resources in a river basin for the analysis of environmental problems and water resources planning requires consideration of the interactions between groundwater and surface water, through all components of the hydrological cycle. GEAMA-HYGA has studied the interaction between surface and ground waters in several projects carried out in several Mediterranean and Atlantic basins of the Iberian Peninsula.

Saline Intrusion

The problems associated with the presence of water catchments near the coast have also been addressed by our group. This has been done from a field perspective (tests and equipment) for the characterization of the hydrogeological and cabinet environment (numerical modeling).

Limnology of Lakes and Reservoirs

The study of static water bodies (lakes and reservoirs) is an important element in integrated water basin management. Among the most outstanding works are those developed within the context of the controlled flooding of the Meirama and As Pontes de García Rodríguez lakes, or the limnological study of the Abegondo-Cecebre reservoir. Associated with these are the morphometric and bathymetric characterization studies of some of these bodies of water.
