Maritime and Port Engineering

GEAMA’s field of maritime and port engineering combines experience in applied research projects with consultancy projects for companies and institutions. The fundamental areas of work are physical modelling and field campaigns, also developing numerical modelling projects in the coastal environment.

In the experimental field, work is carried out in the facilities of the CITEEC R+D Centre, developing projects that allow us to know the potential and limitations of coastal protection and defence works. In particular, numerous projects have been developed on slope dykes with different types and sea states, floating dykes, anti-reflection caissons, screens, and discharges from submarine outfalls from treatment plants and desalination plants. Innovative technologies such as the Multidirectional Wave Dock, laser scanning instrumentation and particle velocimetry techniques (PIV, LIF) are used for these projects.

In field work, GEAMA carries out work related to safety and operability in port facilities, using as a fundamental tool the recording of real data through field campaigns. Projects have been carried out to monitor the behaviour of moored vessels and their relationship with hydrodynamic forcers, the study of overtopping events in breakwaters, and the measurement of transmission, forces and movements on floating pontoons. Some of the analysis tools and methodologies have been developed and validated by the Group itself, in particular the devices for measuring the movement of ships and the camera measurement methodology.

In the field of numerical modelling of coastal environments, work has focused on the analysis of wave propagation, currents in estuaries, estuaries and the open sea, coastal and pollutant transport, sustainable management of marine ecosystems, as well as studies of stratification and bilayer flow. In addition, numerical-experimental studies are carried out to develop new calculation tools for the analysis of wave-structure interaction in the port area.
