The Water and Environmental Engineering Group (GEAMA) at the University of La Coruña (UDC) has secured 2.8€ million in funding to develop an international project aimed at combating marine pollution through river restoration.

The River-Rest project, funded with 2.8€ million from the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme 2021-2027 and led by Luis Cea, Jerónimo Puertas and Esteban Sañudo, began in October and will last for 30 months.

The main objective is to reduce the discharge of sediments and pollutants from rivers into the Atlantic Ocean, a problem that significantly affects environmental health, water sustainability and multiple sectors linked to the so-called Blue Economy.

The project involves the participation of national and Atlantic partners. At the national level, Agencia de Régimen Especial del Ciclo Integral de las Aguas del Retortillo, Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir, Autoridad Portuaria de Sevilla and the company Andalus Organic, S.L. are participating.

At the international level, the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux, the Syndicat Mixte pour le Développement Durable de l’Estuaire de la Gironde and the Université de Limoges (France); Águas do Algarve and the Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal); and Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) are participating.
